U.S. airmen inspect planes at new American base in Russia. U.S. soldiers inspect American Flying Fortress bombers which landed for the first time at a new base built for American aircraft in Soviet Russia. The landings were made on June 2, 1944, after the Fortresses, escorted by American Mustang and Russian Yak fighters, blasted German targets in Bucharest, the Rumanian capital. Four days later, on June 6, American bombers, flying from and returning to the new bases in Russia, bombed Galats, Rumania's chief import port on the Danube River. The flight operations to and from the Soviet Union emphasize the close cooperation of the Alllies and demonstrate that industrial targets in German-held Eastern Europe are exposed to the same heavy bombing attacks which have crippled war industries in Western Germany.
