U.S. airmen land at new American base in Russia after bombing targets in Rumania. A Russian woman serves food and hot coffee to two U.S. airmen who were among the first group of American flyers to land at a new base built for United States aircraft in the Soviet Union. The history-making landings occured on June 2, 1944, when U.S. Flying Fortresses, escorted by American Mustangs and Russian Yak fighters, bombed German targets in Bucharest, the capital of Rumania, and then reared on to the new Soviet bases. Four days later, on June 6, 1944, the American bombers, flying from and returning to their new Russian bases, blasted targets in Galats, Rumania's chief import port. The Soviet bases make war plants in eastern Germany and German-held Eastern Europe vulnerable to the same type of heavy bombings which have crippled the enemy's battle industries in Western Europe.
