Former slave laborers are repatriated.
Former slave laborers are repatriated. In famous forty-and-eightboxcars, former French slave labores are en rout home from Braunschweig, Germany, where they were held by the Germans until freed by troops of the 83rd Division, Ninth U.S. Army. These are a few of many slave laborers being repatriated to France, Belgium, Poland, Russia and Holland at the rate of about 1,200 a day from Braunschweig. Allied officials and liaison workers make arrangements for their journey to their homelands, providing transportations and food. This picture was taken May 12, 1945.
