U.S. wounded brought ashore on New Guinea. An American soldier, wounded in the fighting against the Japanese on the Wake Islands, off the northern coast of New Guinea, is carried ashore from an LST (landing ship-tank) vessel at Hollandia, newly won U.S. base 200 miles to the east. The two strategic Wake Islands were captured by the Americans on May 19, 1944, after a three-day battle.
