Juden auf der Flucht durch Austria : jüdische Displaced Persons in der US-Besatzungszone Österreichs
Discusses the situation of Jewish DPs in Austria. There were ca. 12,500 DPs there in November 1945, 6,000 of them in the American zone, which included Vienna. Reports on the escape of Polish Jews who were exposed to pogroms in postwar Poland. Between July-September 1946 ca. 100,000 Polish Jews fled to the West. These new refugees had perceived that the liberation did not mark the end of the life-threatening situation, and therefore headed for Austria, in order to emigrate from there to Palestine and other countries. new committees were founded to cope with the needs of these transmigratory DPs. In 1947 Romanian Jews fled from Romania to Vienna, due to a miserable economic situation and rising antisemitism. In July and August 10,000 Romanian Jews reached Vienna.
