Memoirs of a Jewish woman, born in 1918 in Vienna. Relates the fate of her family (Beck) in the Holocaust. During the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, Grete's brother was arrested and imprisoned; he was released on condition that he leave Austria in two weeks. With much effort, her mother obtained a visa for him to Shanghai; her father also left for Shanghai in April 1939, while Grete and her sister were sent to England. Her mother stayed behind to take care of her own parents; she was deported to Minsk in June 1942 and murdered there. Grete's father died in Shanghai in February 1943.
