Alaska, strategic U.S. outpost, is modern frontier territory. Here is Alaska, one of the last of the romantic frontiers of North America. The war is bringing tremendous expansian to Alaska, and, more important, is calling attention to its vast potentialities. Alaskans are more air-minded than any people in the world. Because of the wild and tortured terrain, there are only 2,400 miles of roads passable to automobiles outside of the Alcan Highway and not more than 500 miles of railroad tracks in the entire Territory. Airplanes are a neat solution to the transportation problem, and all Alaska now flies with the nonchalance with which an Englishman takes a train. This cow was flown from Anchorage 235 miles inland to McGrath to feed babies. It was simpler to ship the whole cow than to deliver the milk in bottles.
