U.S. Gen. Clark honors American War dead. As a color guard stands at attention, U.S. Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark, commander of the Allied Fifth Army, addresses his troops during Memorial Day ceremonies, on May 30, 1944, honoring the men who died in American wars. Speaking close by an American cemetery in Anzio, on the west coast of Italy, Gen. Clark said in tribute to the dead of the Fifth Army: This is not a moment of sadness nor sorrow, but rather a time of inspiration to spur us on our task which has been set for us. We should use their inspiratoin and fighting spirit to drive us forward. With God's help we shall carry on the task which they began.
