Clark's Allied Fifth Army make their way cautiously through a path marked with white tape by engineers who have cleared this coastal way in western Italy of barbed wire, land mines and booby traps. The Fifth Army liberated Rome, the Italian capital, on June 4, 1944, and one week later had driven northward to a point 88 miles Southeast of Florence.
