American airmen in Soviet Russia. Troops of the Eastern Command, U.S. Strategic and Tactical Air Forces, eat and chat near their tent quarters at an American base in Soviet Russia. The building in the foreground is typical of the wreckage which the Germans left in their wake as they fled before the Red Army from this area not many months before. Establishment of U.S. bases on Soviet territory, which arose from the decisions of the Moscow and Teheran Conferences, increases the scope of shuttle bombing of Nazi Europe. Areas which have been practically outside the range of Allied bombers based in Italy, North Africa and Britain can now be struck with full loads of bombs, including the planes to which the Germans evacuated many of their industries and plants.
