U.S. aircraft hit enemy planes on Formosa. Streams of smoke rise from burning Japanese planes on the Kagi airstrip, Formosa, set afire by U.S. Navy planes at the start of a two-day attack on Oct. 11, 1044. Although a task force of the U.S. Third Fleet destroyed 396 enemy planes and sank or damaged 100 ships in the assault, the Japanese downed only 21 U.S. planes and were unable to damage any U.S. ships. The based in China also began a series of smashes at the strategic and heavily fortified island, which is only 650 miles form the southern and of the Japanese homeland. Many hangars, buildings, oil dumps, warehouses, dockyards, industrial plats and fortifications on Formosa were smashed. NI 9232
