U.S. Navy carrier-based planes blast Tokyo industrial targets. U.S. Navy carrier-based planes blast military and industrial targets in Tokyo area on February 16, 1945, during a two-day attack on the enemy capital. During this first carrier-based assault on the Tokyo are, 509 Japanese planes were destroyed, 150 were damaged and 14 Japanese ships, including three warships, were sunk. Although 49 U.S. planes were lost, no U.S. ship was even damaged although the Fleet was within 300 miles of Tokyo. A week later hundreds of American carrier-based planes again struck the Tokyo area. This assault was followed by the largest B-29 attack on record, with more than 200 of the U.S. Army Air Forces! Superfortresses participating. All the B-29's returned sefely to their base. NI 6555
