Shot down during French landing. First Lieutenant Norman T. Johnson, Vernal, Utah, faces the NBC microphone in England with a smile. Shot down by enemy small arms fire in Normandy, June 27, 1944, the Ninth U.S. Air Force Thunderbolt pilot crash-landed in a field strewn with German obstacles. An advanced patrol of American paratroopers found him and steered him back to the beachhead miles away.
