German prisoner of war. This German prisoner, captured in the battle of the Normandy beaches when the Allied Expeditionary Force made the initial landings in France June 6, 1944, still wears his Afrika Korps arm band. He is soon here in a prisoner-of-war oncampment in England.

War-shattered Marigny. This view, looking down from a height, shows the battered Normandy village of Marigny after German troops had been finally cleared from the area. Marigny was captured by U.S. troops of the Allied Expeditionary Force July 26, 1944, after a bitter struggle.

Mr. Oliver Stanley assisted with his bag by a War Office porter as he left to attend his first meeting of the War Cabinet after taking over his duties as War Minister following recovery from a chill. Mr. Stanley succeeds Mr. Leslie Hore-Belisha, whose resignation from the War Ministry caused much surprise.
