A father and a child in an Italian town liberated by the Allies in the Fall of 1943 smile cheerfully as they wait with their few remaining possessions for the return of peaceful conditions made possible by the Allied advance. The two were left homeless as the Germans retreated northward in the fighting on the Italian mainland.
