Dr. Leo Komar emigrated from Poland to England in 1933 and served as a physician in the British Merchant Navy during World War II. He married Liselotte Frey (1918-1991).

Written in 1980, the text describes how Maria Epstein lived in Lʹviv, Poland (now Ukraine), during the Soviet occupation; was an inhabitant with her husband in the ghetto in Minsk, Belarus; gave birth to and cared for an infant daughter; was liberated from the Germans; escaped from the Soviet Union and fled to Poland; and emigrated with her family to Canada in 1968.

Consists of the first chapter, entitled "Childhood," of the memoir of Peter Mittler, originally of Vienna, Austria. In the memoir, 27 pages, Dr. Mittler describes his memories of the Anschluss. Kristallnacht, antisemitism in Vienna, and his experiences as an eight-year-old on a Kindertransport to England, leaving 11 January 1939.
