Item is a letter. Item was typewritten on a typewriter in black ink on off-white paper. The date of creation emanates from the likeness of the paper and typescript, as well as the greeting, employed in other correspondences described in this series (see items Lieve Loes and Lieve Kinderen). The bottom left of the verso has a small drawing done in pencil.

Item is a letter from F.J. Meijer in Amsterdam regarding the death of soldier and friend of Maurice Smith’s, Simon Verstandig, in Utrecht. Mailed with photograph number 1993.008.148.

Item is a note from a gentile doctor, J.T. Zwaan, attesting that Albert Jacob van Haren has a heart condition and is not able to do heavy work. This explanation was fraudulent and prevented van Haren from being deported from the Netherlands for forced labour.

Kicking at the Darkness was created in tandem with the exhibition, Canada Responds to the Holocaust, 1944 – 1945 produced by the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. The comic tells the story of the Canadian army that fought in Europe in the Second World War and how they discovered the darkness of the Holocaust when encountering the Nazi camps.
