Shloyma Chernyavskiy was born on Sept. 12, 1909, in Volyhnia, Ukraine. He was orphaned at age 10 and was raised in an orphanage. In 1930 he graduated from the Jewish Pedagogical College in Kiev, Ukraine. He worked at the publishing house "Der Shtern" in Kiev in 1930 and published his first work in 1931.
