Sol Graf (Zoltan Grof, Shlomo Graf) was born in Mosonmagyaróvár, Hungary, in 1930. He was an only child. His father, Izidor, suffered from tuberculosis and his mother, Gizella, ran the family store, selling vegetables, fruit, and dairy products.
