Laura Selo née Gumpel (b. 1923) came to England with her two sisters on 1 June 1939 on one of the Nicholas Winton Kindertransports. Originally from Berlin they were sent to a convent school in Bohemia in 1935. Their father, Karl Gumpel, formerly director of the company, Edeka, followed them as did their mother later.

Melania Fogelbaum (1911-1944) was a poet and painter born to Cyla Fogelbaum (b. 1874) in Łódź, Poland. In 1940 Melania and her mother were forced into the Łódź ghetto where Cyla died on February 25, 1942. Melania served as a spiritual and cultural leader to a group of youths in the ghetto.
