Algiers today. The view from General de Gaulle's headquarters in the Villa des Glysines (Wistaria Villa), on a hill in Algiers, looks northward over the Mediterranean to France. Algiers, headquarters of the French Committee of National Liberation, is also the meeting place of the French Consultative Assembly (the Cabinet of the Algiers Government).

This Frenchman, proudly wearing the army uniform which he has kept hidden for four years, looks forward to another chance to fight the Germans in the Volunteer French Army. As the Allies move forward in France, Frenchmen have formed this army to fight against the common enemy.

Nazi signs in Normandy. Corporal David Halberg of Cleceland, Ohio, looks over German signs showing the positions of Nazi units heaped up on the highway to Coutances, France. American forces attacking the Nazis pushed through Coutances and advanced across Normandy into Brittany.

Carentan railroad yard. American soldiers look at the uprooted rail tracks and wrecked freight cars piled up in the railroad yard in Carentan as a result of aerial and naval shellings before American forces drove the Germans from the French city.

War-shattered Marigny. This view, looking down from a height, shows the battered Normandy village of Marigny after German troops had been finally cleared from the area. Marigny was captured by U.S. troops of the Allied Expeditionary Force July 26, 1944, after a bitter struggle.
