Walcheren island, Holland.
Walcheren island, Holland. Deep in the sand dunes which form the natural dikes of Holland, Germans built bunkers to guard against Allied landings. Now Dutch families, homes ruined when the dikes were bombed, live in these cave-like dwellings. High on a dune near the wrecked village of Westkapelle, Dutch housewives hang up the laundry, washed with soap contributed by the American Red Cross.
