Sylvia Malcmacher was born Zlata Distel in Wilno (Vilnius), Poland (now Lithuania) on July 9, 1926. She was one of three daughters. In October 1941, she was forced to live in the Vilnius ghetto with her family. Her eleven-year-old sister, Shifra, was taken away and murdered in the nearby Ponary forest. Consists of one permit to stay in Japan issued to "Rys Berkowicz" (donor), one postcard, sent to the donor in Vilnius from Warsaw, with Nazi censorship stamp; two postcards sent to the donor in Kobe from family and friend; and four envelopes with Nazi censorship stamps sent to the donor in Vilnius from friends in Warsaw who perished in the Holocaust.

The papers consist of a birth certificate for "Abram Levin" [donor's husband] issued by the Rabbinate of Vilna, Poland (Vilnius, Lithuania); a photograph of a family wedding with an inscription in Yiddish; and a Red Cross document about the fate of members of the Kulmanas family.

Statistics compiled by the mayor regarding the residents of Naujoji Vilnia by nationality, confidential documents concerning imprisoning of Jews in the ghettos and safeguarding their property and all precedures regarding this, orders by the chief of the Vilnius county to the chiefs of the county police stations concerning arrests of runaway Jews in hidding and taking them to Lukiškės prison.

Consists of color photocopies of two letters, dated April 1940 and March 1941, which were sent from Frejda Brojdo, of Vilnius (Vilna), Lithuania, to W.H. (William) Kessel of Lousiville, Kentucky.
