U.S. troops cross the Roer. Infantrymen of the Ninth U.S. Army advance cautiously through the rubble in Julich during bitter street fighting for the town. The town waas taken February 24, 1945, when the ancient Citadel, held by the Germans, fell to Lieutenant General William Hood Simpson's forces only one day after they had crossed the Roer River.
