Karl Unterthiner was born on June 16, 1901, in Ridnaun, Austria (now Ridanno, Italy), to Johann and Anna Eisenstecken Unterthiner. He had a brother, John. The family was Roman Catholic. Following World War I (1914-1918), the Austrian province of Tyrol was divided. South Tyrol, including Ridnaun, was given to Italy. The residents maintained their Austrian culture and language.
