P.19 Collection of Carl Lutz, Swiss Diplomat and Righteous Among the Nations, 1935-1970

P.19 Collection of Carl Lutz, Swiss Diplomat and Righteous Among the Nations, 1935-1970

 Carl Lutz (1895-1975) was the Swiss Vice Consul in Jaffa, Eretz Israel, 1935-1941, and in Budapest, Hungary, 1942-1945. Following the German occupation of Hungary, 1944, he was extremely active in rescuing Jews with United States, British, Romanian, El Salvadorian and other citizenships, as well as on behalf of those with certificates to make aliya to Eretz Israel.

 - The collection was submitted to Yad Vashem in 1981, through the generosity of Agnes Hirschi, Lutz's adopted daughter;

 - The collection is composed mainly of booklets written by Lutz, integrating sections of text and photographs relating to his activities in the various places where he served during his diplomatic career; among the documents is a collective Swiss protective passport with the names and photographs of approximately 1,000 Hungarian Jews who benefited from the protection of the Swiss Embassy in Budapest (on exhibit in the Yad Vashem Museum).

 - Additional photographs of Lutz are in the Yad Vashem Photo Archive;

 - An article with a description of the Carl Lutz Collection was published in the Yad Vashem Research Collection, Volume 15, 5744 (1984).
