M.52.DAZhO - Documentation from the State Archives of the Zhitomir Region

 History of the Archives:

In 1919 the Revolutionary Committee of the Volyn sub-section issued an order establishing that public institutions and private individuals are obligated to register their documentation at the Committee for the Preservation of Objects of Art and Culture of the sub-section. In 1920 the archival committee of the Volyn sub-section was established, which dealt with the collection and cataloging of the existing archival documentation. In 1922 an archival authority of the Volyn sub-section was established in place of the archival committee that dealt with the collection of the documentation from the Czarist period and the period of the October Revolution and the civil war. In 1925 the archival authority of the sub-section became the regional authority. Following the cancellation of the sub-sections in 1930 the archival authority became the local authority, and after 1932 it became the State Historical Archives of Zhitomir. The archive's name was changed to the Regional State Historical Archives of Zhitomir in 1938. During World War II many of the collections that were kept in the archive were damaged or destroyed. After the war, the archive returned to its work and began the collection of documentation from the German occupation period. In January 1944 the Executive Committee of the Zhitomir region made the decision regarding the establishment of an archival repository related to the subject of the Great Patriotic War. Since 1980 the archive has been called the State Archives of the Zhitomir Region.

The Sub-Record Group includes documentation of the German and local authorities, as well as documentation of the German Security and Police organizations and local Police organizations during 1941-1945. There is a collection of newspaper clippings, announcements and pamphlets of Ukrainian Nationalists and Nazi authorities in the Zhitomir region during 1941-1944; documentation regarding underground groups and partisans units active in the Zhitomir region during 1941-1945; and documentation of the regional Committee for the Investigation of Nazi War Crimes and Collaborators in the Zhitomir region during 1945-1946.
