Αρχείο Γιοσέφ Νεχαμά

Joseph Nehama was born in Thessaloniki, in 1880. After completing his studies at Alliance Israélite Universelle in Thessaloniki and at École Normale Israélite in Paris, he came back to Salonika to work as an educator, director and supervisor at Alliance Israélite Universelle schools. Nehama turned out to be one of the most prominent figures of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki. Except his engagement with Jewish education and youth, Nehama had been one of the founding members and director of the bank "Union" in Thessaloniki, from 1926 to 1955. During the anti-Jewish measures in Greece, he was deported to Bergen-Belsen, where he managed to survive the Holocaust. Nehama's main interest both before and after the Holocaust was to compose the history of the Jews of Thessaloniki. Some of his most renowned works are "Histoire des Israélites de Salonique", the "Dictionnaire du Judéo-Espagnol" and "In memoriam. Hommage aux Victimes Juives des Nazis en Grèce". The latter was written together with Michael Molcho right after the end of World War II. Nehama died in Thessaloniki in 1971. The Archive is not available for researchers. Part of the Archive has been catalogued extensively. For the rest of the Archive there is a brief catalogue. The Archive consists of manuscripts and unpublished editions of Josheph Nehama’s works.
