Chrétiens et Juifs sous Vichy, 1940-1944 : sauvetage et désobéissance civile

2005

Pt. 1 (pp. 23-115), "Étude générale", discusses the role of civil disobedience in the rescue of Jews in France during World War II. Does not agree with the commonly held view that the French began to help the Jews only after the Vél d'Hiv roundup in July 1942, arguing that rescue efforts began immediately after the armistice with the Germans and intensified with the promulgation of the first antisemitic Vichy law in October 1940. Pt. 2 (pp. 121-619), "Études régionales," compares civil disobedience in the various départements, both among officials and the general population. Shows that not only members of the resistance but also supporters of Pétain helped the Jews. Their motivations were personal and moral, as well as ideological. Focuses on lay members of the Catholic and Protestant Churches and members of resistance groups, presenting a large number of individual examples. Includes bibliographical references (pages 715-729) and indexes. ii, 765 pages : maps ; 24 cm.
