Focuses on the difficulties involved in coping with the Latvian-Jewish-German past. Argues that theses on the extent of Latvian guilt concerning collaboration during the Holocaust are contradictory; historians need to free themselves from prejudices and falsehood, and to reject new myths and irrational resistance. After World War II Latvian historians wrote mostly about Latvian victims, while the Holocaust was discussed only by Jewish historians. Surveys changes after the historical debate which began in 1988, mentioning the condemnation of genocide and antisemitism by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia in 1990.
