Coupable d'être née : adolescente à Auschwitz

1997

Memoirs of a French Jewish woman, born Simone Kadoshe (1931), relating her and her family's experiences in the Holocaust. In 1943 her sister Phiby was arrested by the Gestapo and disappeared, leaving a husband and three children. The husband died and two of the children were arrested by Klaus Barbie and deported to Auschwitz, where they perished. From 1942-44 Simone acted as a messenger for the Résistance in Lyon until she and her parents were betrayed by a neighbor. She and her mother were interrogated and tortured by Barbie and deported to Auschwitz, where her mother died. In 1945 she joined the death march to Ravensbrück. On the way, she was reunited with her father, who was, however, immediately assassinated in her presence. She escaped a mass murder of survivors in a Polish forest and was liberated by Russians. She returned to Paris in 1945; a sister and brother of hers also survived. Simone was one of the plaintiffs and principal witnesses in the indictment of Barbie in 1987 and helped found the museum of the deported Jewish children at Izieu. Includes bibliographical references (pages 201-202). 202 pages ; 22 cm
