Traces the history of the "fichier juif" - the official census of French Jewry between 1940-44. Presents the report of the commission presided over by René Rémond of the Archives Nationales de France from 1992-95. Recounts the discovery of the "fichier" by Serge Klarsfeld in 1991 and the subsequent controversy regarding its authenticity. Analyzes the debate which ensued concerning the place where these historical documents should be ultimately entrusted, and gives the commission's recommendations stating that the "fichier" should be given to the National Archives.
