Gerechte gab es nicht viele : ein deutsch-jüdisches Überlebensschicksal in Mainz, 1928-1945
Pp. 6-40 contain the memoirs of Grünfeld, born in 1928 in Mainz as the son of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. Surveys events during the Nazi regime, including the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. His father was arrested and deported to Buchenwald, but was released six weeks later due to the intervention of his wife. Mentions the deportation of relatives and neighbors to the Piaski concentration camp (near Lublin), beginning in 1942. Reports that many persons evaded this fate by suicide. As a "Mischling", Grünfeld was allowed to remain in Mainz, but suffered from discrimination. In February 1945, he and his family left Mainz in order to escape deportation; in April 1945 they were liberated by the American army. Pp. 67-98 contain photographs and facsimiles of documents. 1.
