Een keten van gummi en en ijzer : de ontwikkeling van het Nederlandse beleid ten aanzien van Duits-Joodse vluchtelingen in de periode 1933-1940
The focus of this dissertation is to ascertain how Dutch government policy in regards to Jewish-German refugees developed between 1933-1940. Although previous research has been conducted regarding the same subject matter, this dissertation approaches it from a different angle. Instead of basing the research on court and police archives, this dissertation was founded on the archives of the Dutch 'Staten-Generaal'. A great advantage to this approach is that it offers a more complete picture of the debates which lead to the creation of Dutch government policy concerning Jewish-German refugees. Not only does it provide a more varied and vivid image of the debates, it also highlights the thought processes behind government policy. To answer the question how the government policy was formed, this dissertation was divided into three sub-questions. The first question focuses on the policy itself, the second question concentrates on the motivations and arguments. The last and third question concerns itself with public opinion and protest and has been based on a study of twenty different newspapers and magazines. This approach has proven itself effective, because it has brought to light that the government policy had already been largely determined between 1933−1934. In conclusion, the dissertation brings to light that the motivations behind government policy were determined not only by the consequences of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, but also fears for political extremism.
