L'Oiseau n'a plus d'ailes ... : Les lettres
Letters sent by a young German (1917-1945), son of a Jewish mother and non-Jewish father (his parents later divorced), mainly addressed to his mother between 1938-41, and letters sent to him (up until 1945). The letters were written in German and have been translated into French. Schwiefert was born in 1917 in Berlin. He left Germany in 1938 for Portugal, settling in Faro while waiting for a visa to South America. He converted officially to Judaism, while his mother, at the same time, converted to Christianity. In late 1939, Schwiefert was expelled from Portugal and found refuge in Greece. After a short stay in Greece, he returned to France in 1940 and joined the French resistance; he was killed in battle in Alsace in January 1945. His mother and two half-sisters escaped to Bulgaria in 1940 and survived the Shoah. Includes a preface by Lanzmann (p. 7-9), who was given the letters by Schwiefert's half-sister, Angelika Schrobsdorff (who had settled in Jerusalem), and had them published in French. 181 pages, 4 leaves of plates : portraits, facsimiles ; 22 cm
