George T. testimony 1983
George T. was born in 1912 in Zsolna, Hungary, which became part of Czechoslovakia after the First World War. He describes his family and early childhood. His family moved to Miskolc, Hungary after his mother had a stroke and died shortly after. He recalls his father remarrying a woman much more religious. He describes increasing antisemitism. He describes attending medical school in Debrecen and facing discrimination. He discusses his military service. He explains the quota system for immigration and his luck getting a visa. He recalls unsuccessfully trying to convince his father and stepmother to leave. George describes his efforts to leave the country and his travel through Holland. He recalls travelling by ship to New Jersey. He discusses the political situation in Europe in the 1930s and his father’s refusal to believe anything would happen to Hungarian Jews. His father and stepmother perished in Auschwitz. He describes the fate of his younger half-brother who also perished. George describes his education and employment in hospitals across the United States. He recalls serving overseas in the US Army Medical Corps. He discusses his career in psychiatry.
