Allied Invasion of Balikpapan Borneo. Continuing the allied invasion of Japanese occupied areas of the Netherlands East Indies and following an intensive air and sea bombardment of the vicinity, troops of the 7th Division, AIF, landed at Balikpapan, Borneo, on Sunday, July 1, 1945. On Tuesday 10 July, 1945, units of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army landed on the northern shore of Balikpapan Bay in support of the Australian troops. A Corporal of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army from the West Indies, holds up a small dog, the only living creature found amongst the ruins of a building in Balikpapan. NI 3165
