Kampong Makassar, Batavia: The pitiful conditions in which 10,000 women and children internees were forced to live are impossible to describe. The filth and stench of the camp was almost unbearable. Here a woman is preparing a meagre meal over an open fire. Most of the women had only one dress when they were interned three and a half years ago, and how they managed to keep clothes is hard to imagine. NI 6107
