American Military Government in Germany (OWI-PWD picture story by Martin A. Bursten; photos by Frank Werner). Justin Steinhauser (center), former Jewish resident of Bayeuth and lone representative of his religion to return to the town after the Nazis were routed by the American forces, is welcomed back by representatives of the three remaining denominations in Bayreuth. Lieutenant Leonard Baker (right), Education and Religion Officer, invited Mr. Steinhauser to sit in on the initial conference he held with the town's ecclesiastical leaders. Left to right are: The Rev. Ludwig Rexroth, Methodist Episcopal Church; Dean August Ammon, Lutheran Church; Mr. Steinhauser, the Rev. Franz Stoss, Catholic Church, and Lieutenant Baker. It is the responsibility of Lieutenant Baker to eliminate Nazi influence in religious circles, to provide protection and fair treatment for all religious elements and to permit freedom of religious worship for everyone.
