New Commander of U.S. Twentieth Air Force in the Marianas. Lieutenant General Nathan F. Twining, formerly head of the 15th U.S. Army Air Force in the Mediterranean theater, will take over command of the Twentieth U.S. Army Air Force in the central Pacific Marianas on August 1, 1945, succeeding Major General Curtis E. LeMay. General LeMay has been promoted to serve as chief of staff under General Carl Spaatz, commander of Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific. In his new post, General Twining will direct Marianas-based B-29 Supperfortresses in their continuing attacks on industrial and military targets on Japan's home islands.
