Japanse General Tomoyuki Yamashita (second from right), who commanded the Japanese forces in the Philippines, goes over plans for his defense after being charges with responsibility for atrocities committed by troops under his command against American and Allied prisoners of war, internees and civilians. Two members of his counsel - U.S. Army officers - and a Japanese interpreter look on. Upon his arraingement Oct. 7, 1945, before a five-man U.S. Army War Crimes Commission in Manila, capital of the Philippines, he pleaded not guilty and was presented with a bill of particulars citing 64 instances of large-scale atrocities committed in the Philippines by troops under his command.
