Japanese gun on Borneo Smashed by U.S. Bombers A U.S. soldier (right) near Balikpapan, on Borneo's southeast coast, inspects a Japanese 120-mm. twinbarrel gun which was smashed by the 13th U.S. Army Air Force's pre-landing bombing of the japanese-held oil center. On july 1, 1945, U.S. General of the ArmyDouglas Macathur, commander of Allied military forces in the facific, announced that Australian amphibious forces had landed at Balikpapan, thus virtually completting 'our tactical control of the entire southwest Pacific." One week later, a new amphibious landing by Austrlian troops completed Allied control of the Balikpapan Bay Shore area.
