Base constructed by U.S. on Saipan. This is an aerial view of the U.S. Naval Air Base at Marpi Point on the southwest Pacific Marianas island of Saipan. The large Marianas islands of Guam, Tinian and Saipan are among the nine bases the U.S. Navy recommended for retention by the U.S. The recommendation was made to the Naval Affairs Committees of the two houses of Congress on Sept. 5, 1945. U.S. Navy Seabees (members of construction battalions) constructed the military installations on Saipan, which U.S. fighting forces liberated from the Japanese in August, 1944.
