U.S. supplies landed at Aitape. A supply-laden truck is swung into a landing barge from a U.S. Liberty ship which is anchored off Aitape, on the northern coast of New Guinea, where American troops stormed ashore on April 22, 1944. Immediately after U.S. amphibious forces established beachheads at Aitape and at two points flanking Hollandia, to the west, landing craft pushed ashore with supplies and reinforcements. The simultaneous landings were successfully developed into a three-pronged American offensive that resulted in the capture of four strategic airfields from the Japanese and completed the encirclement of an estimated 60,000 enemy troops dispersed along the northern coastal area of New Guinea, in the Southwest Pacific.
