U.S. Marines attack Japanese with grenades and Molotov cocktails. Using rifle grenades, hand grenades and deadly Molotov cocktails, members of a U.S. Marine Corps unit attack a Japanese jungle position on Peleliu in the central Pacific Palau Islands. One of the Marines (center) is hurling a flaming cocktail, an improvised bomb, after lightning it from a torch stuck in the underbrush. The Marines landed on Peleliu September 14, 1944, and in two weeks gained control of all the island except for two pockets of futilely resisting enemy troops who were cut off from all hope of escape or reinforcement.
