U.S. soldiers form guard of honor for Brazilian troops returning home from Italy. Throngs line the streets of Rio de Janeiro, capital or Brazil, as a color guard of American soldiers forms a guard of honor for the Brazilian Expeditionary Force returning home from Italy in July, 1945. The American soldiers are members of the Tenth U.S. Mountain Division which fought side by side with the Brazilians against the Germans in Italy. The Brazilians formed the first Latin American force over to fight on European soil. The Brazilian troops participated with outstanding success in both the North Appennines and Po Valley campaigns, winning commendations during the 1945 spring offensive from U.S. General Mark W. Clark, commander of the Allied Fifteenth Army group, who headed the Allied Fifth Army when the Brazilian troops joined it.
