U.S. Base on Adak in Aleutian Islands. The end of the war permitted, for the first time, the release of this photograph of a U.S. base in the north Pacific Aleutian Islands. Shown is a general view of the bleak outpost at Adak, from which American forces launched the assault which drove the Japanese from Attu Island in May, 1943. After this action the Japanese abandoned Kiska, which they had also occupied, by August 15, 1943.
