Owing to the type of country over which the Allied forces are fighting in Normandy, air observation is invaluable to the gunners for the accuracy of their fire. The Air Observation Squadron in their Auster IV aircraft carry out this neccessary work for the artillery. the pilots are all officers and are trained to fly the aircraft at very low speeds, practically over the enemy lines, and by means of wireless to direct fire on the enemy. The fire is directed for Naval shelling as well as for field artillery. A 25 pdr field gun with an Auster aircraft flying above it, underlining the close cooperation between the observer in the plane and the gun crew below.
