Chained Debtors to be cleared from Addis Ababa.
26 augustus 1935
Chained Debtors to be cleared from Addis Ababa. Dispatches from Addis Ababa told of the Ethiopian Emperor's personal direction of the found-up of beggars, lepers and "chained debtors" on the streets of the capital, and their removal to prevent offense to foreigners. This unusual picture of Abyssinia have been tethered to an existence amounting to slavery, as they worked off their debts in their creditors' service. Those who shudderd at Dickens' picture of the debtors prison in England. May find much more that is repulsive in this age-old custom.
