Leghorn greets U.S. troops. Italian civilians press fruit and flowers on U.S. soldiers of the Allied Fifth Army soldiers as they enter Leghorn after driving out the Germans, Fifth Army troops took Leghorn, third largest port in Italy, July 19, 1944, without opposition in the city itself after one of the hardest fights in the Italian campaign. The port installations, which in prewar days handled upward of 9,000 tons of shipping a day, were virtually destroyed, anything not damaged by Allied bombing having been blown up by the retreating Nazis.
